Perspectives of a Lady, Gentleman & Dane

Music Monday Archive

For something a little different on this Music Monday I thought I would share some funny videos from the TV Show Lip Sync Battle. Have you ever watched it? I have found the show to get boring with some of the guest stars but this recent episode with Anna Kendrick and John Krasinski is hilarious. Take a look and tell me what you think (watch to the end for another celebrity surprise)!    🙂

If you liked those- my other favorites are the battles with Jimmy Fallon & Dwayne Johnson and Anne Hathaway & Emily Blunt.
Hope your Monday is going a little more cheery then the gloomy rainy day we are having.

How was your Passover/Easter weekend? We had a lot of fun spending time with our families but it definitely tired us out by Sunday evening. I woke up this morning and needed a cheery song to get me up and running around and knew the Gorillaz would be a perfect start to this week.

I am a huge fan of their first self titled album, Gorillaz (which you can listen to free with Amazon prime membership here) but their album Plastic Beach has a lot more up beat music. Their songs are perfect for a morning wake up and even some uplifting stretching or yoga.

Have you had a listen?

To start with, I am not a huge fan of this song, I have tried listening to it many times hoping it will become as catchy as “Call Me Maybe” but I just cant get into it. So why post it? The video is hilarious, who would ever imagine Tom Hanks starring in a music video (and then have Justin Bieber cameo randomly). Have you watched it yet?

Once you watch the music video, I would strongly recommend the parody below, it is a great laugh too. I hope everyone is starting their week off in a silly mood, hopefully this week will fly by 🙂

I was very surprised when Brian recommended that I listen to Frank Turner, mostly because I never thought Brian liked that kind of music. There is always something to learn about each other even after a few years. What was no surprise is that I would love his music; the songs are a combination of funk and pop mixed together in catchy love sonnets and I cant get enough. My favorite album is Tape Deck Heart, this is definitely one of the most listened songs on my ipod, with Recovery as close second.

What kind of love music do you listen to?

I was holding on to this song for a while really wanting to share it but never knowing how to fully explain what this song and album mean to me. There would never be Music Monday posts if it wasn’t for this album, there truthfully would probably not be this website if not for it too. I was never really into music, I would listen to whatever was popular on the radio at the time, but that would be as far as I would go into being interested to a song or an artist. Things drastically changed mostly due to this album.

When I first started dating Brian he was on a break from school so we had a lot of time and energy to spend each afternoon running around and planning crazy dates and being up until all hours. Once his winter break ended and he started having classes after work it started to get a little tough for both of us to find ways of spending good quality time together but not having to drive somewhere far to do so.

One evening we decided to make our first dinner together and just hang out on the couch and relax. I am one who gets pretty uncomfortable with quiet pauses in conversation but Brian put on some music in the background and it made everything feel just perfect. When we were finished with dinner, Brian put Help Wanted Nights, by the Good Life, on his record player and we laid down and cuddled up and just relaxed. There was nothing to concentrate on other then each other and the music, it was such a simple yet beautiful way to spend an hour. That was when I knew I was falling in love with this amazing guy laying by my side.

Listening to something on vinyl compared to the radio or pandora does make a difference, some people say it has to do with sound quality (I truthfully cannot tell), I think it has to do with the fact that you have to actively listen to the music since it doesn’t just keep going and going. It made me start appreciating what was playing in the background and started my love for music again.

By this point Brian and I have probably over done it, we have hundred of records stored away in all the possible storage spots in the tiny studio apartment but I would not have it any other way. To this day whenever either of us has had an overwhelming day we just put on a record (usually the Good Life or Jason Isbell), cuddle up and just listen.

I hope you enjoyed my little story and this beautiful song. Have a fabulous Monday and a great week!

P.S.- Love you Brian!

As Hannah mentioned, the winter blues are here, and while she’s got some great ways of getting through (I particularly enjoy the baking), I prefer to indulge the dreary setting.  To me, there’s no better way to get through the blues than to put on a good album and listen to songs of heart break and suffering.  There’s something about hearing somebody else’s stories sung that allows me to let go of mine.  For today’s music Monday, I give you ‘Ladykiller’ by The Horrible Crowes, a song about having your woman stolen away from you by some younger, better looking guy.  If you’re feeling down I’d suggest listening to the whole album, Elsie.

Did you watch the Oscars last night? We dont have cable, or even a tv, so I missed out but had been following as much as I could online. I was mesmerized by the performance with John Legend and Common. This song won Best Original Song and it is evident why.

Did you have a chance to watch this year? What did you think of all the musical performances?

My other favorites were Everything is Awesome by Tegan & Sara and then Lost Stars by Maroon 5.

How did your weekend go? I was sick through the whole thing and still sick, so I am huddled in bed drinking lots of hot tea hoping I heal quick.

I was really excited that after just posting about Jason Isbell, his wife and him just released a two single ep “Sea Songs“. I am in love all over. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Have a happy healthy week 🙂

Sorry for the big delays between posts, it has been a crazy time since New Years. I am hoping over the next few weeks things will calm down and I will be able to work more on this blog. I really enjoy it, as its a way for me to be always learning something new, and it is a great way to focus and relax.

Since Valentines day is so close I thought it would be fun to have the week focus on flowers, gifts and just overall love, whether for others or just for yourself. Over the weekend Brian and I were really excited to be able to see Jason Isbell in concert in New York (he is one of our favorite country/rock singers and I have written many posts for Music Monday on him because I just love love love his songs). We were extra lucky because Jason Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, came to join on stage for a few duets. Both of them were as amazing live, as I thought they would be, but by far the favorite through the whole audience was Cover Me Up and I thought it was perfect for a love filled week.

Did you have a listen? Does this song not send goosebumps up your arms?

How was your weekend? Excited for Valentines day or dreading the whole thing and excited for the week to be over?

I am motivated to make this week as productive and cheerful and stress free as possible. I heard this song this morning and think its the perfect way to start a Monday. Its cheerful, catchy and inspiring in many ways. Just listening to this song made me rush to the computer to download her whole, Sing to the Moon, album.

Take a listen! Does it not make you have a rush of energy to complete the daunting task waiting for you?
