I feel that up here, in the greater New York City area, a lot of people go through some awful seasonal allergies. I have symptoms come spring but nothing hard to manage without a few tissues on hand. On the other side of the spectrum, my mom and Brian, go through a lot of hassle to survive the changing seasons allergens. The moment my mom called me saying she cant go outside this weekend because of how bad she is starting to feel, I started blasting our air purifier 24/7 in hopes that it will help Brian and me.
My apartment does not have good ventilation and this last winter after the first few weeks of cold weather and blasting the heat, Brian started having some really bad sore throats, and I followed with the same symptoms soon after. We first tried a humidifier but that didn’t work and thus Brian started a search for an air filtration system and found the Honeywell HEPA Air Purifier. Our goal was to find an affordable high quality purifier that still met the HEPA standards. The key for any good air purifiers is making sure that it actually has a HEPA filter (by US standards it removes at least 99.97% of all 0.3µm airborne particles) and helps keep airborne contaminants at bay. There are unfortunately many marketed as “HEPA like” or “HEPA style” purifiers, so be careful when shopping for yourself or others, not only for air purifiers but for vacuums as well, since those don’t have to follow any standardizations.
We have now had ours for a few months and I am quite impressed. Our throats cleared up pretty quickly, my energy bill has not increased by too much even after we were blasting ours non stop for days, and the air purifier is easy to control, move and clean. It has also helped clean the smell up in the apartment after I either burned some food or Charlie was having a bad stomach day. Brian’s mom now has one and I am pretty sure my mom will be giving in and buying one very soon as well.
So far we have made it through the first weekend of full on warm spring weather with nothing too bad allergy symptom wise. With the air purifier running I was able to even leave the window open a little to get some fresh air in. How about you, bad spring allergies? Any good remedies that have helped in the long run? I am always open to more ideas to try. I am hoping that once we move down to South Carolina our seasonal allergies will becomes less problematic or vanish completely.
