I cannot wait until I have the chance to go to the Kentucky Derby! There is something just fascinating about this racing tradition filled with beautiful race horses, impressive fashion statements and great food and drinks.
The Kentucky Derby is held every year on the first Saturday in May which closes the 2 week long Kentucky Derby Festival, held in Louisville, Kentucky. If the derby was only about the race, it would be over in just about 2 minutes; of course there is so much more!
The things I am most looking forward to when I finally get the chance:
Thunder Over Louisville- I have heard about this event since I was a little girl. It is the kickoff to the Kentucky Derby Festival, and is the largest fireworks display that occurs annually in all of North America.
Fashion- A huge variety of original and beautiful hats.
Mint Juleps- I cant wait to sip on this traditional derby drink (a beautiful mix of bourbon, mint and sugar syrup)
And Most Importantly Horses- Such majestic creatures; every time someone calls Charlie a horse I laugh at the comparison. The race usually includes 20 horses- only 3yr old Thoroughbreds qualify. The fastest record time held so far is by the Secretariat in 1973 (1min 59.4 seconds). This year the winner was California Chrome (2min 3.66 seconds).
Who wants to make some hats and join me next year?
