Perspectives of a Lady, Gentleman & Dane

How was your Passover/Easter weekend? We had a lot of fun spending time with our families but it definitely tired us out by Sunday evening. I woke up this morning and needed a cheery song to get me up and running around and knew the Gorillaz would be a perfect start to this week.

I am a huge fan of their first self titled album, Gorillaz (which you can listen to free with Amazon prime membership here) but their album Plastic Beach has a lot more up beat music. Their songs are perfect for a morning wake up and even some uplifting stretching or yoga.

Have you had a listen?

I was holding on to this song for a while really wanting to share it but never knowing how to fully explain what this song and album mean to me. There would never be Music Monday posts if it wasn’t for this album, there truthfully would probably not be this website if not for it too. I was never really into music, I would listen to whatever was popular on the radio at the time, but that would be as far as I would go into being interested to a song or an artist. Things drastically changed mostly due to this album.

When I first started dating Brian he was on a break from school so we had a lot of time and energy to spend each afternoon running around and planning crazy dates and being up until all hours. Once his winter break ended and he started having classes after work it started to get a little tough for both of us to find ways of spending good quality time together but not having to drive somewhere far to do so.

One evening we decided to make our first dinner together and just hang out on the couch and relax. I am one who gets pretty uncomfortable with quiet pauses in conversation but Brian put on some music in the background and it made everything feel just perfect. When we were finished with dinner, Brian put Help Wanted Nights, by the Good Life, on his record player and we laid down and cuddled up and just relaxed. There was nothing to concentrate on other then each other and the music, it was such a simple yet beautiful way to spend an hour. That was when I knew I was falling in love with this amazing guy laying by my side.

Listening to something on vinyl compared to the radio or pandora does make a difference, some people say it has to do with sound quality (I truthfully cannot tell), I think it has to do with the fact that you have to actively listen to the music since it doesn’t just keep going and going. It made me start appreciating what was playing in the background and started my love for music again.

By this point Brian and I have probably over done it, we have hundred of records stored away in all the possible storage spots in the tiny studio apartment but I would not have it any other way. To this day whenever either of us has had an overwhelming day we just put on a record (usually the Good Life or Jason Isbell), cuddle up and just listen.

I hope you enjoyed my little story and this beautiful song. Have a fabulous Monday and a great week!

P.S.- Love you Brian!

As Hannah mentioned, the winter blues are here, and while she’s got some great ways of getting through (I particularly enjoy the baking), I prefer to indulge the dreary setting.  To me, there’s no better way to get through the blues than to put on a good album and listen to songs of heart break and suffering.  There’s something about hearing somebody else’s stories sung that allows me to let go of mine.  For today’s music Monday, I give you ‘Ladykiller’ by The Horrible Crowes, a song about having your woman stolen away from you by some younger, better looking guy.  If you’re feeling down I’d suggest listening to the whole album, Elsie.

How was your weekend? Are you ready for this crazy week ahead? We tried our best to get as much rest as possible since we will be going away for Christmas and then away again for New Years.

I have really been enjoying moody soulful songs lately and of course this song always come to mind when I want to listen to that type of music. It is somehow the perfect mix of depressing yet sexy. I also feels it works great on any holiday music list you might have.

What is your favorite kind of music to listen to during the holidays? I have also been listening a lot to She & Him’s new album, Classics, and their Christmas album, A Very She & Him Christmas. I would highly recommend them if you need to add to your holiday playlist.

What are your plans for the week?

I was listening to The National radio station on Pandora with Brian and this song came on and half way through Brian and I looked up at each other and were impressed with what we were listening to. This is why I love Pandora, I probably would have never heard this song otherwise.

Milky Chance is a german folk group made up of Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch. They met in high school in a music class and have been playing music together ever since. I think I might be the last to hear of them since their 2015 North America Tour is practically sold out.

What do you think of this song? Catchy, right?

Thanks to everyone’s help, the Kickstarter for the new Palaxy Tracks album was successful and Brandon will be releasing it some time early 2015.  The album is on pre-order at www.palaxytracks.com in either digital or vinyl format.  It’s funny how tapes and cd’s have been left by the wayside while vinyl remains the physical alternative to a digital download.

As a bonus Brandon has released a music video for the track The Afterlives, available now on their website and youtube.  That’s the good news.  The bad news, I can see how the video isn’t all that approachable for a general audience.  It’s basically a bad vhs video of a woman in zombie make up which skips around a lot.  So if you’re into the artsy vibe of it, check it out and enjoy, if not I’ll understand if you just want to let it play in another window while you watch something more pleasant.

If you missed it here is my first post on Palaxy Tracks.

We are a big fan of Johnny Cash and spend a lot of our downtime listening to our growing collection of his vinyls. This weekend we added American V: A Hundred Highways, a record that was recorded but then released almost 3 years after his death. The album is filled with many somber songs including this cover song by Nine Inch Nails. The song is filled with regret and sadness and makes me tear up every time I hear it and every time I see this video, yet I really really love it.

Are you a Johnny Cash fan? What do you think of this song?

I have really been enjoying researching and listening to a variety of music so that I can develop these Music Monday posts. It has been a very hectic week and will be for another week (and then hopefully I get a breather) and unfortunately I was not able to get some new music up for today. Below is a summary of some of the past posts that can hopefully make up for the lack of a new one. Enjoy and hope you have a great week!

Country: Deer Tick, Amanda Shires (and one with her husband), Jason Isbell (+1 more), Shovels & Rope (+1 more), Striking Matches & Sera Cahoone

Indie: Lumineers, National, Postal Service, Two Gallants, Bright Eyes & Ingrid Michaelson

Rock: Ryan Adams, Mountain Goats & Palaxy Tracks

This song came on Pandora in the middle of our quiet Saturday afternoon and it made both me and Brian just start dancing. The Lumineers have a lot of catchy songs like Ho Hey and Stubborn Love, but so far Big Parade has been my favorite.

I hope you can have some time for a listen (and maybe a secret little dance).

What other songs or bands help get you in the mood for some dancing around the house? Another favorite of mine for that is any music by the Gorillaz.

I am so happy that Ryan Adam’s hiatus from music has ended. He spent the last few years, since his last release Ashes & Fire in 2011, recovering from an inner ear disease and enjoying his personal life. I am very excited for this new self titled album Ryan Adams to come out Sept 9th (I already have it preordered on Amazon)!!! A few of the songs have come out as singles pre album release and even though the favorite for most is Gimme Something Good, I am in love with the raw emotion found in My Wrecking Ball (video above). It is truly an amazing song filled with everything I ever expected from Ryan Adam’s music, it is a must listen.

Let me know what you think!!!

P.S.- Shovels & Rope album came out last week, great video here.
