Its finally here!!! Shovel & Rope album Swimmin’ Time is finally out. After work I will be running to our favorite record store and picking up the vinyl copy and will probably spend the next few days just listening to it over and over again. Shovels & Rope already released a music video for their new album as well and it just proves how awesome this record really is. They stick true to their southern twang rock music and make me love them even more.

What do you think? Have you listened to them before?

I am still truly in love with their song Birmingham!

I have only recently heard of Deer Tick even though they have been around for a while. They are labeled as a rock band however I feel most of their music has a quality of folk and country just without the country twang mixed in. Deer Tick does a lot of great covers in their live music but I am also really fond of their newest album, Negativity. This video for Dream’s in the Ditch is a perfect example of the kind of music throughout the whole album, and its a cute idea for a music video.

What do you think? Have you heard of anything new music wise that you can share with me?

Back in 2002, The Mountain Goats put out a highly polished, at least by their standards, concept album, Tallahassee,  which is unified around chronicling the tempests and furies of a relationship set in Tallahassee.  The album isn’t up beat and I’ve chosen the hardest hitting song on the album to hopefully draw you in to experiencing the album as a whole, trust me it’s worth it. So why pick such a downer of a song / album?  Love, no matter how strong, will be tested and tried.  Through out the album the relationship is tested in many ways and yet even at their darkest hour they go down “hand in unlovable hand”. To me this shows a strength and endurance which is missing in the current pop-culture frailty of relationships. Divorce after divorce I see people unwilling to weather unavoidable storms. So what’s the point?  The storms are coming and they might last an entire album, so the question is, are you willing to weather it or are you cutting loose to save yourself? Let me know what you think.

The Palaxy Tracks aren’t very well known but their album Twelve Rooms has some of my favorite music of all time. Their songs are light, melodic with beautiful lyrics, akin to Pedro the Lion and Radiohead. Unfortunately they haven’t put out any new material since 2005.

There’s good news though, The Palaxy Tracks are working on a new album, Wilderness. The album is being funded by Kickstarter and they’ve still got a ways to go, so please check out their pitch and help them if you can. The best news for me is that Wilderness is going to be put out on 180 gram vinyl! As many of you know Hannah and I love our vinyl collection and the rich sound, artwork and experience you get along with it.
